West Georgia Wellness Center accepts UnitedHealthcare for residential mental health, substance abuse, medical detox, and dual diagnosis care. UHC behavioral health benefits are managed through Optum Behavioral Health. We verify your benefits — including out-of-network PPO benefits — at no cost, usually within a few hours on business days.
How UnitedHealthcare & Optum Coverage Works
UnitedHealthcare administers behavioral health benefits through Optum Behavioral Health (formerly United Behavioral Health). Optum manages prior authorization, utilization review, level-of-care determinations, and appeals for mental health and addiction treatment under most UHC commercial plans.
UHC offers many plan types — Choice Plus, Options PPO, Navigate, Core, and employer self-funded plans — with different network structures. PPO plans in particular often include out-of-network benefits worth checking. We identify your specific UHC plan and contact Optum directly to confirm both out-of-network benefits for residential care.
Optum applies its proprietary Level of Care Guidelines to residential authorization, evaluating symptom severity, treatment history, safety, and whether a less intensive level of care is appropriate. Our clinical team prepares documentation built specifically around those criteria. Under MHPAEA, UHC and Optum must apply the same coverage standards to behavioral health as to comparable physical health care.
UnitedHealthcare PPO out-of-network? We work with that. Many people assume out-of-network means no coverage — it often doesn't. If your UHC plan includes out-of-network (OON) benefits, you may be able to apply them toward residential treatment here, even though we're an out-of-network provider. Your actual OON coverage depends on your plan's deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum — exactly what our team confirms for you, at no cost, before you decide. We don't guess and we don't promise a number; we get the real answer from UHC/Optum in writing.
What UnitedHealthcare Typically Covers Here
- Residential mental health treatment — with prior authorization when Optum Level of Care criteria are met
- Residential substance abuse treatment — for moderate to severe substance use disorders needing 24-hour structured care
- Medical detox — when physician-supervised withdrawal management is clinically indicated and safety concerns are documented
- Dual diagnosis treatment — when co-occurring psychiatric and substance use diagnoses are documented
- TMS therapy — many UHC commercial plans cover it for treatment-resistant depression with appropriate documentation
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) — under most plans, as part of opioid use disorder treatment

What If UnitedHealthcare or Optum Denies the Claim?
An initial denial is not the end of the process. Our utilization review team is experienced in Optum appeals, peer-to-peer reviews, and parity-based complaints. We identify whether it's a medical-necessity, administrative, or coverage-exclusion issue; submit a clinical appeal addressing Optum's Level of Care criteria; request a peer-to-peer review between our medical director and Optum's reviewing clinician; and advise on a parity complaint if behavioral health is being treated more restrictively than comparable medical care.
